I won't be posting detailed thoughts on the Veep debate because the NY Times editorial (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/03/opinion/03fri1.html?em) sums up exactly how I feel. The CNN/major news outlet story was that Palin exceeded expectations but Biden won. Well, considering the expectation was that Palin couldn't speak in full sentences I'm not sure how much Republicans should really be patting themselves on the back. The editorial points out that she offered zero substance, but plenty of cliches and attacks. In fact, my next post, coming later today, will be about how conservative rhetoric has degenerated into name-calling -- there's no argument left more them to make (at least economically and in terms of foreign policy) so it's become one giant version of calling Democrats "poopy-pants."
But more on that later. What did you think of the debate?

I thought Gov. Palin was well trained by her handlers. In other words, she showed well. With that in mind, I think Sen. Biden was Best in Show.
I think Biden won, I'm not sure if he "one".
I think it's awesome that Sarah Palin's big accomplishment was instead of starting on a point and randomly wandering off to something else in response to the question she just started far from the subject.
Seriously...she couldn't produce any response on the fly. Everything was from her "talking points". She was looking down at her papers the entire time. It is a complete embarrassment that anyone can say she "did well".
Worse, when cornered on multiple issues which she clearly didn't have responses to, she would change the subject. "I wanna go back to the energy issue".
Its not a debate when you simply get up there and read off a piece of paper and then change the subject when you are directly challenged. Biden was there to debate -- and debate he did. Palin was there to read sentences off a piece of paper. She was there to give a bunch of 45 second speeches while looking cute.
Palin was a disaster. Biden came into the debate with a decently high bar set, and if he had been the one who floundered on issues and not answered questions and changed subjects like she did, the public and media would be ripping him a new one. She came off completely unpresidential whereas he was smooth, articulate and very poignant.
Just one question...how can you possibly propose to fix global warming when you don't want to debate the causes, or even worse just think that it is the nature of the cycle???

The last line is good and came up a lot in the debate, I bet it will be a whole SNL sketch this week:
'Palin said it should surprise no one she disagrees with the McCain on strategy regarding Michigan, saying they are “a team of mavericks. Of course we’re not gonna agree on everything.'"
"He thinks the fundamentals of our economy our strong, I think.... well, sometimes I thnk. We're a team of mavericks, of course we're not gonna agree on everything."
"He thinks the United States has a great constitution, I think the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 14th amendments are gonna make God angry and we should remove them. We're a team of mavericks, of course we're not going to agree on everything."
An improvement on my previous comment, replace "We're a team of mavericks, of course we're not going to agree on everything." With "I'm a teenager and he's my grandpa, of course we're not going to agree on everything."
I really enjoyed these comments -- thanks for posting everyone! I happen to agree with pretty much everyone and more than a few certainly made me laugh.
And I think WarChest and others raise a good point -- it wasn't really a debate. Palin simply restated talking points and didn't actually engage with questions or what Biden was actually saying.
it amazes me that nobody in the media bothered to comment on her refusal to answer questions when she didn't have a pre-scripted response.
